APRIL
On April 4 2023, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged former President Donald Trump with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to conceal a crime related to the hush money he directed his then-attorney Michael Cohen to pay porn star Stormy Daniels (given name Stephanie Clifford) to cover up an alleged affair the two had in 2006. I had been working on a March doll whose theme was “in like a lion, out like a lamb.” That led naturally to “April showers.” Showers. Storms. Stormy. Lightning. The bolts of an angry Zeus, whose mythic philandering has excused the indiscretions of mortal men ever since the days of ancient Greece.
Donald Trump, to me, is the current American avatar for the ‘Head of the Patriarchy.’ In this aspect, he embodies the ancient progenitor of this societal role—Zeus. The King of Olympus was the God of weather, the skies, fate, and the rule of law. How fitting then that an actress who named herself Stormy might take him down from his lofty post through the power of the courts.
While men have more power in our society than women do, there are layers of hierarchy within these two camps. The role of President is arguably the most powerful role in the United States. The role of a sex worker is arguably near the bottom. This power dynamic, unfair as it is, seems timeless when one considers the philandering of Zeus. Despite his many, many affairs (some of which appear an awful lot like rape) he was never removed from his role as arbiter of justice. His wife Hera, a god herself, was powerless to punish her husband, and instead resorted to taking out her rage on the women themselves. This is what we would call “blaming the victim” in contemporary terms.
The April doll is Stormy Daniels as Zeus. Her hair is cloud-like, and she is robed in the white linens of an Athenian god. Like the rulers of Olympus, she is a dimensional character with many sides to her personality. She’s funny and cute and has boobs with these adorable, tiny nipples. And, she has the power to upend 3,000 years of misogynistic, male-dominated societies where a man in power can abuse that power without fearing consequences.
“I think it’s unfair that the president of the United States isn’t held to the same rules that any other citizen would be held to. Allowing someone to get away with things that are definitely illegal sets a terrifying precedent for anyone who comes into office after him.”
