JANUARY

In her underwear, with snowflakes falling upon her skin, January relaxes with her eyes closed, untroubled by the world. I wish I could be untroubled by the world.

No matter how many times I have experienced it, the way people can be cold to one another still shocks me. We put on all kinds of emotional armor to protect ourselves from this. We dress ourselves in clothing meant to make us look braver, stronger, more wealthy, more powerful, all to avoid the pain of human coldness.

January is tranquil. The cold does not bother her. She closes her eyes, unafraid of who might approach. She is not wearing armor, or even clothing. She finds her strength in being vulnerable. January is able to relax and be in the moment in a way that I am envious of and have not felt in a very long time.

“I don’t like cold people at all. It makes me feel really insecure.”

— Gloria Vanderbilt

January is 24" high when standing, and 18" high when seated

Her chair measures 6"h x 8"w x 8"d

January is made from cotton and vintage glass buttons.
