JULY

On May 26, 2023, Disney released the live action version of “The Little Mermaid.” July 2023 brought 15 days where temperatures reached 100°  or more in Albuquerque. Heat can be suffocating to the body. Being robbed of one’s voice is suffocating to the spirit. Thinking about the movie during the sweltering summer got me asking myself, “what if we give this woman different options? What if she doesn’t have to be stuck with a fish tail to stay cool, or stuck without her voice to pursue what her heart longs for?”

July is a mermaid with legs. Unlike Ariel, July does not need to give up the ability to speak in order to walk upon land or pursue the longings of her heart. Faceless, July does not even need a mouth to communicate. July’s body is an unending current of flowing energy that expresses itself without ceasing.

She sings with her being. She chooses land or water, as is her wont. No tyrant father or toxic woman-figure uses their pain as an excuse to cause her suffering.

“The choice the Little Mermaid is faced with, ‘if you want to pursue love, you have to give up your voice,’ is bullshit.”

— Alicia Webb

July is 24" high when standing, and 18" high when seated

Her chair measures 6"h x 8"w x 8"d

July is made from flannel, muslin, cotton, and vintage glass buttons.
