JUNE
June’s fun. She’s prickly. I don’t know if they’re protective prickles, but she’s not removing her prickles to make anyone feel more comfortable. She’s got these beautiful flowers and an angry little face. June doesn’t look like she’s trying hard for anyone.
I live in New Mexico. I live in the desert. Because May featured “East Coast” flowers, I needed to create a doll with cactus flowers. Were I to be a flower, I would want to be a cholla or an opuntia. Everyone recognizes a rose, but not many people stop to see a cactus flower. When I was growing up in Albuquerque, I don’t remember ever seeing them. Now I can’t miss them. As I have grown, what I perceive is more tied to my inner compass than what the culture at large values.
June has big prickly eyebrows. She has a crown of cactus paddles. She doesn’t mind if no one notices her. June does what she wants.
“A cactus doesn't live in the desert because it likes the desert; it lives there because the desert hasn't killed it yet.”
