MARCH
March is a study in contrast. Made of flannel and muslin, she is both fuzzy and smooth, ready for cold weather and warm. With the hood of her jacket on, she is a lioness. But beneath, she is dressed in 70s-era lounge pajamas made from a vintage scarf. It is fun to see Red Riding Hood dressed as The Wolf.
In my mind, these pajamas are what one would wear to the Playboy Mansion if Hugh Hefner had never existed. (Otherwise, why would one ever go?) But despite its pretensions otherwise, we know today that a woman would need to be a lioness to escape the Playboy Mansion without becoming prey to the predatory men who lurked in those sumptuously appointed dens.
The question March asks is how can a woman develop a fierce exterior that will protect her from a patriarchal society while still retaining the soft vulnerability she has inside? It is a question I ask myself often as I raise a daughter whom I send out into the world, hoping I have taught her to adequately defend and protect herself without losing too much of her inner lamb.
“March comes in like a Lion,
goes out like a Lamb.”
— Thomas Fuller
