SEPTEMBER

September is lounging with her eyes closed. She isn’t worried that someone might take advantage of her vulnerability and attack her. September can let her guard down in a way that I cannot.

These dolls are chances for me to imagine a place where I could put myself in a position that doesn’t exist in the real world. I’m wearing a sheer dress. Every bit of myself is exposed. I am relaxed and comfortable. What would that even be like? What would this world look like if it wasn’t layers of trauma or the patriarchy or individual fear of individual men?

September’s fabric looks like tattoos. A printed flower tendril forms one of her eyes. The tattoos are protective. They make her feel strong and powerful, which helps her access her vulnerability.

September in Albuquerque is still hot, but it finally cools down at night. This is an evening scene. It’s got bats all over it. I imagine a sleeping porch with a Southern Gothic air. September is relaxing on the chaise on a hot summer night. It’s like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof but without all the anxiety and all the men.

“What is the victory of a cat on a hot tin roof?—I wish I knew... Just staying on it, I guess, as long as she can...”

— Tennessee Williams

September is 24" high when standing, and 18" high when seated

Her chair measures 6"h x 8"w x 8"d

September is made from flannel, muslin, cotton, and vintage glass buttons.
